My family has lived in Oklahoma for over 186 years after being removed from our ancestral lands in the southeast. Growing up, I heard stories of wild green onions (tafvmpuce), outside of natural germination, were planted here after being brought to Oklahoma by Indigenous people on the Trail of Tears during the removal era. Wild green onions are often deemed as weeds in western society when it comes to maintaining yards. This leads to the harsh removal of wild onions from the land, but usually, they are unsuccessful because once the bulb’s roots are firmly planted, it will thrive year after year. I use this as a parallel to represent my family and ancestors’ resilience, as we were once removed from the land but continue to thrive despite the harsh conditions we have endured. The tafvmpuce (wild green onions) symbolizes each generation of my family who have lived here in Oklahoma, all connected by our roots. I am the 7th generation living on my mvskoke reservation, and my children are the 8th in the center, wrapping around each other. The green onion forms are tattered, cracked, and torn as if scars or wounds from the generational passing on of colonial and generational trauma that comes from assimilation, genocide, and removal. The downward spiral of the forms represents the cyclical nature of life, what gets passed down, lost, repeated, changed, and healed. As someone who has recognized the century-long generational cycle of hurt, I am choosing what to pass on that fosters growth instead of numbing and surviving. The forms that represent my children in the center are whole, unbroken, twisting together as they grow, supported by generations before them as their roots take hold.
